CHESAPEAKE BAY TRIP

The 8th grade science classes took an overnight field trip Oct 30th - Oct 31st, 2008. We traveled to Clagett Farm, a Chesapeake Bay Foundation education site to learn about the interactions between land and water. Students spent one day in land based learning and exploration and the other day in water based learning activities. We camped at the site overnight. We were engaging in 3 fundraising activities to keep costs low.

1. We sold Macy's Shop for a Cause coupons ($5) for 20% off at Macy's Sat. Sept 20th.

2. We started sales of Gianna's pizza and snack kits shortly.

3. We approached local businesses and organization for donations.

NASA Field trip

Have you ever seen the real NASA with many gadgets? Or where so many scientists and space shuttles have been and launched? On Monday, October 5th, 2009, Mr. Tuna’s homeroom 8C, ClubMatrix, and the Journalism Club took a journey through science on a sphere at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  First, they had fun at the NASA visitor center, where they saw many pictures from space on a magical, floating sphere. They found out what real outer space looks like. Afterwards, they met two real scientists who told them about their job and what science really was.

Right after a lunch break, they moved to the main NASA building to look at various rooms, such as “the clean room”, which was always clean because of constant pressurized air always cleaning, 1000 times cleaner than a regular office. Each employee had to wear a thick white suit, called a “Bunny Suit”, to go in the room. There were observatories, science labs, test areas, and other rooms for storage that students got the opportunity to tour. There was a room with different equipment and tools all of which had been to space. They also got to observe how scientists used machines to see if a space shuttle would fall apart while flying in outer space.

Then, after the learning part was done, they had more fun than they did on the whole field trip! They got to make rockets and actually test and fly them in groups of three. When all groups finished, they got to go to a huge soccer field to launch them. Not all rockets worked performed to expectations. Some rockets spun around, some didn’t really go far, some reached altitudes students could not see, some landed on tall trees and got stuck, while and some just flew up but the parachute didn’t work. They all agreed that they had a great time on this field trip learning about science and outer space!!
